SYNOPSIS
A famous writer leaves his home in Tessaloniki to drive to the hospital that he will probably never leave. The meeting with an Albanian little boy, a smuggled window washer, keeps him away from solitute for a few days, the memory of his dead wife brings him back to a past dedicated too much to himself and his work and too little to the others.
CRITICAL NOTES
Written with Tonino Guerra e Petros Markaris, with the photography of usual Yorgos Arvanitis and Andreas Sinanos, the 11th Angelopoulos’s film – Golden Palm at 51st Cannes Film Festival 1998: another late award – it is an exercise of poetic mastery that borders in the poeticism for the accumulation of metaphors, themes, suggestions. Too much litterature: the inadequate figure of 19th century poet that buys words; the succession of endings in the last part up to the choice of the more ideological one. This does not prevent the spectator capable of attention, and abandon to unusual rythms to admire the high figurative spendour and some memorable sequences such as the funeral for little Selim. (M. Morandini)
